In short, we need to know what a customer is ‘worth’ to you over the Lifetime of their relationship with you to establish what you are prepared to ‘pay’ to obtain a stream of new customer. Make sense?
If your product sells for £100 and on average they buy from you 3 times at that price over the ‘lifetime’ of being a customer/client, then they are worth £300 to you. A simple maths equation is that you can then spend up to this amount, minus the cost of goods sold, running costs and other factors that will help you establish your cost of goods sold. Clearly you have a Gross & Net profit target …
(Cost per acquisition minus the total costs to deliver the product or service, plus advertising fees, plus target net profit, equals The net value you can spend to acquire a customer).
Using this example, let’s assume the net figure is £100. That is what you would be prepared to ‘pay’ to get a new customer. Our job as marketers is to increase the average order value (AOV) and lifetime value (LTV), whilst reducing your cost per acquisition (CPA) costs to make advertising more profitable.
